A Seamless Journey: What Australian Patients Can Expect When Travelling to the U.S. for Gender Selection

Gender Selection IVF in the U.S

Travelling to the U.S. for gender selection IVF can sound like a lot. Two countries, fertility medications, scans, blood tests, flights, clinic appointments and a very important treatment plan all moving at once.

That is exactly why Gender Selection Australia exists.

Our role is to connect the Australian and U.S. parts of your treatment, so you are not left trying to coordinate everything yourself. Instead, you have a clear pathway from your first conversation with our team through to treatment with Dr Daniel Potter in Newport Beach, California.

Stage 1: Your journey starts in Australia

You do not need to fly to California just to find out whether treatment is right for you.

The process begins with a free consultation with our team, followed by registration and the preliminary fertility testing Dr Potter needs to understand your individual circumstances.

Much of this can be completed locally. We can help you find Australian doctors for referrals and prescriptions, as well as appropriate testing providers and pharmacies.

Once your results are ready, they are sent to Dr Potter’s team. You will then have a one-on-one consultation with Dr Potter to discuss your results, goals and treatment options before receiving your personalised IVF schedule, medication plan and monitoring instructions.

By the time you travel, a significant amount of the groundwork is already done.

Stage 2: Prepare for egg retrieval, with support on both sides

Your ovarian stimulation generally begins before you leave Australia.

This is often the part that feels most daunting when families first hear about overseas IVF gender selection. How do medications prescribed as part of a U.S. treatment plan actually work when you are living thousands of kilometres away?

That is where having both a local point of contact and Dr Potter’s clinical team makes a difference.

We help coordinate the practical Australian side, including doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies and monitoring. Dr Potter’s nurse coordinator provides the clinical instructions and keeps your treatment moving according to your personalised plan.

You are not expected to translate an American treatment protocol into an Australian one by yourself.

Stage 3: Your first trip to California

Your first visit to Newport Beach is centred around egg collection and usually lasts around five to seven days, depending on your individual treatment schedule.

You will attend your final monitoring appointments before Dr Potter performs the egg retrieval.

The retrieved eggs are then fertilised and the resulting embryos are cultured in the laboratory. Embryos that reach the appropriate stage can be biopsied for preimplantation genetic testing, or PGT.

This testing provides information about the embryos’ chromosomes, including chromosomal gender, allowing Dr Potter and his team to identify suitable embryos of the gender your family is hoping for.

The embryos are frozen while the results are finalised.

Stage 4: Head home while the next step is planned

One thing families are often relieved to hear is that you do not need to stay in the U.S. throughout this entire process.

After egg retrieval, you can return home to Australia.

Once the PGT results are available, Dr Potter will discuss the outcome with you and, where appropriate embryos are available, begin planning your frozen embryo transfer.

For many families, this can be one of the most emotional stages of the journey. After months of planning and treatment, you may finally learn whether you have a suitable embryo of the sex you have been hoping to welcome into your family.

Stage 5: Return for embryo transfer

Your second trip to Newport Beach is for your frozen embryo transfer. This second trip is shorter and more focused, and the female can travel on her own for just 3–4 days if it suits your family better.

The transfer itself is a much simpler procedure than egg retrieval and generally does not require sedation, and is similar to a Pap smear.. Dr Potter will provide specific guidance around the procedure and your recovery afterwards.

Once Dr Potter is happy for you to travel, you can return home to Australia rather than staying in the U.S. for ongoing pregnancy care.

Stage 6: Come home, without losing your support team

Leaving California does not mean the support suddenly stops.

Early pregnancy blood tests and scans can be completed locally, with Dr Potter providing the appropriate orders and his team continuing to monitor your progress during the early stages until you reach week 10 of your pregnancy, when you graduate from Dr Potter’s care

Your care will eventually transition back to your Australian doctor, while our team remains here to support you through the process.

That continuity matters. Especially when you have invested so much emotionally, financially and practically into growing your family.

Gender selection IVF requires international travel. It should not require you to become your own international treatment coordinator.

If you are considering treatment with Dr Potter, book a free consultation with the Gender Selection Australia team. We can talk you through the steps, costs, travel and exactly what the journey could look like for you.
