Your Family, Your Journey: Why Families Consider Gender Selection

Gender Selection IVF

Perhaps you’ve always pictured yourself raising a daughter. Or maybe, after a house full of boys, you’ve found yourself wondering what life with a little girl might look like. Whatever brought you here, there’s one thing we’d like you to know: you’re not alone in feeling this way.

Welcome to the first article in our four-part series exploring the gender selection journey. In this series, our experts at Gender Selection Australia cover everything from understanding your hopes and motivations to making decisions, talking with loved ones and exploring treatment options. For now, let’s start with the question that brings so many families to us: why does this matter to me?

If you’re wondering how to have a baby boy or how to have a baby girl, we’re here to help you understand your options.

Why do families consider gender selection?

There’s no single answer. After years of helping Australian families explore gender selection, we’ve heard plenty of different stories, hopes and motivations.

For some parents, it’s about family balancing. They might have two wonderful daughters and hope to experience raising a son, or three boys and a long-held dream of welcoming a girl.

Others have imagined a particular family dynamic since childhood. Perhaps they’ve always pictured having a son and a daughter, or there’s a meaningful connection to the idea of raising a child of a particular sex.

For some, the desire develops over time. They hadn’t given it much thought before becoming parents, but their experiences have helped them discover something new about the family they’d like to build.

Whatever the reason, it’s often far more personal and considered than simply preferring boys over girls.

You can love your children and still have another dream

This is something we feel particularly strongly about. You can adore your children, feel incredibly fortunate to be their parent and still hope to experience something different. Those feelings can exist together.

Wanting a daughter doesn’t diminish your love for your sons. Hoping for a little boy doesn’t mean your girls aren’t everything you could have wished for.

We know this because the owners of Gender Selection Australia have been through IVF and gender selection treatment with Dr Daniel Potter themselves. Their experience is one of the reasons our approach is so personal.

We understand that the decision to explore gender selection doesn’t necessarily come from dissatisfaction with the family you have. Often, it comes from thinking carefully about the family you hope to complete.

And there’s an important distinction between appreciating everything you have and allowing yourself to acknowledge something you still want.

Understanding what gender selection means to you

Before exploring how to have a baby boy or how to have a baby girl, it’s worth spending some time thinking about why that particular hope feels important.

What experiences are you imagining? Has this been a lifelong wish, or something that’s developed since becoming a parent? And what would pursuing that dream mean for you and your family?

You don’t need to have all the answers immediately.

In fact, taking the time to understand your feelings can be just as valuable as researching the practical side of gender selection.

Our role at Gender Selection Australia is to provide information, guidance and a supportive place to ask questions. Not to tell you what your family should look like.

Through our exclusive partnership with Dr Potter in California, we help Australians explore their options when they’re ready. But there’s no expectation that every conversation needs to lead to treatment.

Sometimes, the first step is simply understanding what you want.

Where to from here?

And remember, this is just part one! Over the next three articles, we’ll explore how to make a decision that’s right for you, navigate conversations with loved ones and understand the treatment options available.

Whether you’re simply curious or seriously considering gender selection, we’re here to help you explore what comes next.
